Time Management

Our Time is Limited. Only God knows the length of our days. Why then do we tend to overlook God as a source of wisdom when we decide how to spend our precious time? Why do we let others determine how we spend our time? How might our lives be different, if we habitually spent the first few minutes of our day in a quiet time with our Lord and let Him make up our schedule?

Monday – Content Day I tend to write nearly every day of the week because I enjoy it and it’s incredibly beneficial to my business. I will set up my emails to go to my lists as well as articles to go on my blogs, if they are different. However beyond writing, I like to have many different sources of traffic – once I’m done writing I will transcribe those articles to videos and podcasts. I don’t like to breeze through the content creation process just to get them done so this usually takes up a full work day.

Some things that we all can we subtract from our schedules are anything that is not urgent and is not a priority in your life. Temporarily, less urgent priorities can be done later. This will give you time for urgent priorities with extra margin for the unexpected. If God puts it on our heart to do something now, we need some flexibility. If our schedule is so full that we are rushing from one thing to another we probably won’t even hear God’s prompting, let alone be able to obey Him.

So how do we break the cycle of poorly managing our time and being stressed out? Here is a tip sheet to offer some suggestions.

1. The time you set aside to plan will actually save you time. 2. Be aware of time-wasters, such as excessive computer or television time. 3. Being busy doesn’t mean you are productive. Don’t over-commit yourself. Say no to unnecessary activities. 4. Organize your time. Make use of planners, calendars, and lists. 5. Organize your paperwork. For example, it is much easier to sit down and pay your bills quickly when everything is in one place. 6. Disorganization leads to stress, procrastination, and not getting things done. 7. Set goals and priorities to keep you on track. 8. Stop procrastinating. Having things hanging over your head leads to stress. Trying completing the tasks that you don’t want to do first, and then you’re free of them. 9. Make some time for yourself, no matter how busy you are to prevent burnout. 10. Delegate. Teach your children how to do age-appropriate chores. Not only will it help you out, but you are instilling responsibility and teaching them life skills. Try to make this a pleasant experience so it can be quality time with them. 11. Work at making good time management a habit. Remember that bad habits can be broken, and good habits can be formed. 12. Don’t get discouraged. If you fail one day, pick up and try again the next. Allow yourself time to make changes in your habits.

Friday – Miscellaneous Friday is kind of a lax makeup day for me. I’ll generally have worked 30+ hours on the week coming into the day and usually just spend time tightening up all of the work that I’ve done. Whether it’s building more links, editing articles that may have been rejected for whatever reason, doing more research for my businesses, networking with other list owners to plan an ad swap or whatever the day calls for. It’s hard not to look forward to Friday’s knowing that there is a cold beer waiting for me once I hear my alarm go off that the day is done.

This time management is imperative for anybody but especially for those who are just starting out. If you are still working another job, you probably only have a select few hours per day or week to dedicate to online marketing and really can’t afford to waste any time so make sure that your schedule is tight with only the tasks that are improving your business. The 80/20 rule sucks but it can be overcome with the correct time management.
