The Universal Need For Unconditional Love And Acceptance.

by David Woodward

Why is it that every human heart cries out for unconditional love? Perhaps because being loved liked that is, in most human relationships, usually unattainable? Or that our own impure hearts acknowledge that we do not have the ability to give it to others?

Or that the deep emotional holes in the lives of most men and women cry out to be filled? Or that being loved unconditionally is the deepest need of the human heart?

Whatever the reason, unconditional love is a very rare commodity in the barren landscapes of the majority of our lives today. Some talk about it. Others are unaware of it. A few others will even deny it. Yet most yearn for it, consciously or unconsciously.

And to be accepted? Don’t all of us desire just to be accepted for the real us – “warts and all”. And yet predominantly we are categorized, valued, placed and accepted by what we have achieved, what we look like, what we do, etc. That acceptance is based on whether we ‘fit the bill’. The problem is that others decide what criteria make up ‘the bill’.

This impossible achievement is for ever dangled in front of us – like a carrot. Our lifetime is spent trying to do the impossible – to be accepted. To this end we chase, strive, perform – whatever it takes to reach the unreachable level that others have set for us.

It’s not even a winnable challenge. Just an ordeal of chasing our tail or going around and around the merry-go-round in endless pursuit of the unattainable. A never-ending game where the goalposts are always being moved. Just when we think we may be able to finally score that winning goal, an unseen force moves the goalposts – again.

So, what happens? Is there even a solution? As recognised earlier, there is a fundamental element of the human condition that cries out to be accepted and loved. But more than that. To be accepted and loved WITHOUT PRE-CONDITIONS.

To be given this……Our hearts cry out for that deep, soaking, freely given acceptance and love. But – more importantly – for it to be given without conditions or attachments.

Is it possible to ever be given this? Is there a solution to the deepest need of the human heart? Can a human being really meet that desire and heart’s cry? Can it be done? Or do we all accept that these needs are destined never to be fulfilled?

Some would say that it is only in the person of Jesus (claiming to be both man and God come down to earth) that we can find true unconditional love and acceptamce. Others would cry that this is absurd, heretical, wishful thinking, lies, brazen rubbish, the stuff of myths and fables, unproven, fanciful…….

It cannot be denied, however, that this claim has caused contention, strife and even conflict in the last two thousand years. Whether WE believe it or not is a personal – even confidential – matter. But certainly, unless we attempt to answer questions of life, we will never get the answers.
